At the Institute for Sustainable Communities, we believe that innovative solutions are the key to ensuring that every community – particularly those hit hardest by the climate crisis – finds a path to sustainability and resiliency for generations to come.
By donating cryptocurrency, you are part of a growing community that is shaping the future of philanthropy. With your donation of crypto to the Institute for Sustainable Communities, you are using a leading-edge way to ensure that communities have the tools and resources they need to find sustainable solutions to climate change that are shaped and shared by all.
You can find all of our accepted cryptocurrencies in our FAQ below.
Please note that donations made through the widget below support Institute for Sustainable Communities’ entire mission and will not be designated to a specific campaign or location.
Your gift will be used where it is needed most.

The complex levels of computation required to mine cryptocurrency usually consume a high level of energy, which leaves a large carbon footprint. To diminish their environmental impact, many cryptocurrencies are becoming greener by using “Proof-of-Stake” techniques to mine – a process that is 99% more energy efficient.
To help ensure that any energy consumed by the crypto industry is entirely carbon-free, the Crypto Climate Accord was formed in 2021 by the Energy Web Foundation, Rocky Mountain Institute, and Alliance for Innovative Regulations. The Accord aims to achieve net-zero emissions in the global crypto industry by 2030.
While the Institute for Sustainable Communities accepts 70+ cryptocurrencies, we encourage cryptocurrencies that endeavor to lower their carbon footprint:
1inch (1INCH), Amp (AMP), Audius (AUDIO), ChainLink (LINK), Dai (DAI), Fantom (FTM), Livepeer (LPT), Loopring (LRC), Moss Carbon Credit (MCO2), Polygon (MATIC), Tezos (XTZ), The Sandbox (SAND)
Ethereum (ETH) also recently changed its mining method to reduce its energy consumption by 99.9%!
Additionally, The Giving Block recently announced that they will be purchasing twice the recommended carbon offsets each year. This program not only erases the carbon footprint of crypto donations made on The Giving Block, but turns them into an environmental force for good. With this news, The Giving Block is now the most environmentally friendly crypto donation platform in existence.
Crypto donations are one of the most tax-efficient ways to give to charity. Your crypto donation is tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law if you pay taxes in the U.S. By making a charitable gift, you may also be eligible to significantly reduce what you would otherwise owe in capital gains taxes.
The IRS classifies cryptocurrency as property for tax purposes. Donating cryptocurrency is therefore a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. This makes cryptocurrency donations one of the most tax-efficient ways to support ISC.
When you donate crypto to the Institute for Sustainable Communities, we immediately convert your donation to US dollars at the current market exchange rate, which means all donations are non-refundable.
You can generate a wallet address by using our widget above.
Once you reach the third page, the widget will generate a dynamic wallet address you can use to complete your donation.
When using The Giving Block widget you’ll notice that a new wallet address is created every time. This is because The Giving Block uses dynamic wallet addresses.
This is done to protect your privacy and ours. Doing so helps prevent third parties from viewing all of your transaction history simply by copying and pasting the wallet address or TXID into a block explorer.
All addresses that are generated are associated with your donor information AND ours forever. This means that you can reuse the address as often as you’d like or you can generate a new one each time. It’s up to you. In some cases, users want to re-use an address because they’ve added it as a payout address in an app or smart contract.
In order to receive a receipt with your donation, you must enter your email when prompted by our widget above. You will automatically receive a receipt from receipts@thegivingblock.com as soon as the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain. This changes depending on the blockchain – you can refer to this guide for estimates and more information. Please note that you will receive a receipt every time you donate with our wallet address to the receipt you enter when generating the address.
