Our Work

Our programs work to co-create, develop, test, refine, and share practical and cost-effective approaches to addressing local challenges, focusing on the most pressing threats to environmental and community well-being. Through collaboration with local leaders and organizations, we support projects that improve living conditions, strengthen local economies, and create safer, healthier environments. By providing expertise, resources, and connections, we help communities build resilience and drive lasting, meaningful change.

Organizations located in EPA Regions 1, 2, and 3 are encouraged to apply first to their respective regional programs. As a National Grantmaker, SCR focuses on supporting, coordinating, and providing oversight to Regional Grantmakers. Regional Grantmakers may then refer selected applicants to the national program based on specific criteria, including:

  • Entities with potential conflicts of interest with Regional Grantmakers
  • Entities requiring translation or language support
  • Entities recommended by Regional Grantmakers
  • Entities recommended by the Advisory Council
  • Entities proposing projects that span multiple regions or states

Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center

ISC is one of three national Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers (TCTACs). TCTACs support communities facing challenges in accessing resources and building partnerships with philanthropic and private organizations. ISC helps communities navigate federal grant systems, develop strong proposals, manage funding, and provides guidance on community engagement and support services.

Partnership for Resilient Communities

The Partnership for Resilient Communities (PRC)  works to strengthen urban resilience by supporting locally-driven leadership and advancing strategies that promote community resilience through policy engagement, local collaboration, and community-centered development. ISC focuses on enhancing community resilience by addressing resource gaps and encouraging broad participation by those most impacted in leadership and decision-making processes.

AEBD

The AEBD project aims to strengthen community capacity for implementing resource-efficient building practices in urban areas. The project focuses on fostering leadership alliances in Oakland, CA, St. Louis, MO, and Philadelphia, PA to launch demonstration projects and create replicable models for directing resources to local building owners. The goal is to support long-term solutions that improve health, expand economic opportunities, and enhance housing options within communities.

Southeast Florida Regional Compact

The Southeast Florida Regional Compact is a partnership between Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach Counties focused on collaborative strategies to address environmental challenges (e.g., extreme weather), strengthen regional infrastructure, and promote long-term community resilience across Southeast Florida.
